Full Mouth Rehabilitation / Reconstruction

Rampant decay, periodontal disease, tooth fractures/trauma, excessive wear of dentition due to parafunctional habits (grinding), tooth erosion (due to acid reflux, foods, beverages) etc may lead to severe deterioration of dentition. This may lead to difficulty in chewing food, lip/cheek biting, unpleasant smile, joint pain in the jaws and an overall reduced quality of life due to these reasons.

Full mouth rehabilitation / reconstruction deals with treating the oral cavity as a whole and restoring the health of entire dentition along with its supporting structures. It involves an amalgamation of preventive, restorative, periodontal and surgical therapies to improve their functions and longevity.

After an initial evaluation, study models are obtained and the patient is advised radiographic scans of the oral cavity such as OPG or CBCT to examine the oral structures thoroughly before devising a treatment plan. These assist in treatment planning and also act as a tool to explain the existing issues to the patient and how the same can be managed. Once the treatment plan is formulated, it is discussed with the patient in detail and patient consent is obtained for the same before proceeding with the treatment.

The treatment is then carried out in stepwise manner as follows:

a. Preliminary Phase :

Teeth that require immediate attention, such as those with active infection/ swelling are treated. Teeth that cannot be saved are extracted.

b. Phase I Therapy :

Procedures such as scaling and polishing, dental fillings (temporary or permanent), minor orthodontic corrections, removal of defective prosthesis and temporization, occlusal therapy are carried out.

c. Phase II Therapy :

Root canal treatments, gum surgeries and dental implant placements are carried out.

d. Phase III Therapy :

As we reach the end of phase II therapy, all the infective processes that were active in the mouth would have been taken care of and the mouth would have reached an infection-free and healthy state. This gives us a very good foundation to carry out the remainder of the rehabilitation. The response to periodontal therapy is also evaluated at this stage.

If any temporary restorations were done during the initial phases, those are converted to final definitive restorations. Dental crowns are fabricated for teeth requiring structural fortification and over the dental implants that have been previously placed. Missing teeth are replaced with the help of tooth supported bridges, dental implant bridges or with the help of removable dentures.

A complete functional occlusal rehabilitation is carried out in which the teeth, jaws and muscles function in harmony with each other.

e. Maintenance Phase:

Patient is educated about oral hygiene maintenance and periodic recalls are scheduled to monitor the oral health.
